Tosca was asked to create this mural for the STRAAT KUNST MUSEUM exhibition in partnership with Blind Walls Gallery and Stedelijk Museum Breda.

Tosca: This was a very personal project for me due to it touching on the topic of street harassment. I was assaulted on the same street that the museum is located on. In doing this project, I hope to show that experiences with street harassment are not tied to a time or place and that so many (trans)women, queer and gender nonconforming people experience it.

Street Harassment Mural at Straat Kunst Museum

Tosca’s goal with the design was to show a diverse group of characters so that most people can recognise themselves, and to show the fear of being harassed and how small it makes you feel. The characters are intertwined, running together away from the fear and darkness.

It was extra special that Tosca got to work with her partner Niek on this project, who provided technical and emotional support and who acted as an advocate against street harassment.

Tosca: I hope that after seeing the painting, visitors (especially cis male visitors) will feel called to take more direct action against rape culture, support victims, and engage in dialogue with each other about this problem.

By moving through the exhibition, the visitor automatically became part of this story as they walked in the same direction as these larger-than-life characters: away from the violence and towards a harassment free future.
